In retrospect, following the disintegration of the Soviet Union (USSR) and the emergence of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), it appears that the quick dissolution of the KGB was a tactic designed by then-Premier Mikhail Gorbachev to quell the growing Russian public’s distaste of the intelligence organization—a distaste that could well have led to rioting and the seizure of KGB files.
