Could the Soviet illegals program still have sleeper agents in the United States now working for the… by Tony Garcia

Answer by Tony Garcia:

I answered a similar question, What happened to the world wide network of KGB sleepers when the USSR collapsed in 1989? I’ll post that answer below, as I feel it suffices.

“They still exist, with many now working for the Soviet spy agency SVR.

In 2010, as part of an operation dubbed Ghost Story, the FBI arrested Donald Heathfield, a Harvard University graduate and senior member of a consultancy firm, who was born Andrei Olegovich Bezrukov, and Tracey Foley, a real estate agent who was born Elena Vavilova, as part of a 10-person Russian spy ring. They had two children who were born in Canada, though the couple had lived for the most part in the United States.

The identities the parents had used were Canadians who had died long ago as children. The couple were both born in the Soviet Union, had undergone training by the KGB and had been dispatched abroad as deep-cover agents, known as “illegals.” They were betrayed by a Russian spy who had defected.

After the arrest, the children were stripped of their Canadian citizenship, even though the children were unaware their parents were spies for the SVR. All ten Russian spies were swapped for four Russians who had been held in Russian prisons on charges of spying for the West. Donald and Tracey’s two children were sent to Russia, where they now reside. (see: Operation Ghost Stories: Inside the Russian Spy Case)”
