What does the 2016 election mean for third parties? by Tony Garcia

Answer by Tony Garcia:

Do you remember when Independent Texas businessman H. Ross Perot ran for president in 1992? According to the polls, at one point incumbent Republican President George H. W. Bush, Democratic Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton and Mr. Perot were in a dead heat, each polling 33% of those likely to vote.

In 1980, Republican Congressman John B. Anderson from Illinois ran as an Independent for president and received 7% of the popular vote.

Independent or third-party challenges have long been a part of modern presidential history.
